Jamie Smith-Sessa

On July 12 of 2011, Jamie was severely injured in a motorcycle accident and had a minimal outlook of survival.  With his own strong will to live, and the love and support of his family, he proved the doctors wrong.

Jamie sustained numerous severe injuries from the accident, including brain trauma and the loss of his dominant right arm.  He suffers from extreme pain every day.  He has undergone and continues to work through intensive therapy treatment to recover memory loss and to gain competence with occupational functionality of his left arm.
After extensive research and meetings with various experts, it appears that the best treatment for Jamie’s long-term well-being is a surgery called Targeted Muscle Reinnervation surgery (TMR). TMR is a new surgical procedure that reassigns nerves that once controlled the arm and the hand. By reassigning existing nerves, doctors can make it possible for people who have had upper-arm amputations to control their prosthetic devices by merely thinking about the action they want to perform.  People who undergo TMR surgery are then fitted with and trained to use a myoelectric prosthetic arm.

TMR can significantly reduce the amount of pain Jamie continues to experience, which in itself could greatly enhance his quality of life.
