On March 30th, 2013, Barb was admitted to the ER with pneumonia and difficulty breathing. Her symptoms worsened as she became septic and had further complications with MRSA. The first couple of weeks were life threatening, but Barb slowly started to show signs of improving. There was another crash when she had a ruptured bowel, but the surgeon was able to repair the damage. All together, Barb has had 6 surgeries.
Even though Barb’s general health improved, she lost both legs below the knee, all of her fingers, and had an ileostomy. Since leaving the hospital on September 10th, she has had the ileostomy reversed, is being fitted with prosthetics, and is in therapy.
A couple of future needs for Barb would be an iPad to use for reading music, modifications to a vehicle for driving, and prostheses as Barb’s limbs change.
