KARE 11: Family, friends rally around injured Afghanistan vet

BROOKLYN PARK — Nearly six months after he lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan, a Brooklyn Center man was honored by his friends and family Saturday. Hundreds of people gathered for a fundraiser for Marco Sort who was injured in Afghanistan earlier this year. “One day we were going down a road and all of a sudden we got hit,” Sort said about the I.E.D. explosion that resulted in the double-amputation of his legs. Sort would recover with the help of his friends, family — including his wife, Gina — and one man who knows all too well the journey Sort has begun.”I went from being in control of my life to being out of control,” said Aaron Holm about an accident in 2007 that resulted in the loss of both of his legs. One year after Holm’s life changed, he founded an organization — “Wiggle Your Toes,” which provides resources and support to what Holm describes as the “limb loss” community. “It’s just giving back to the limb loss community, one individual at a time,” Holm said. For Solt, it’s the kind of “giving” that’s made all the difference. “When you’re in Afghanistan, you just feel alone besides the buddies you’ve got, and having people here doing these things… It’s unreal. I can’t explain it,” he said.
